Sabbat was originally conceived in 1969 and was initiated with the song "Devils Due", which was adapted from and ancient anonymous poem from the late middle ages.
The song, like the peom was adapted by the creater of Sabbat, Craig R. Pedersen.   The music and melody was written and performed by the group "Uther Pendragon", who were still working under the name "Mandala".
The group had recently reformed after the lead singer and drummer left the group and at the time Craig Pedersen was preparing to enter the US Army after being drafted.  He was heading off the Vietnam after training at Fort Ord in Carmel, Monterey.
The original Rock Opera was based on a Black Mass held at the site of Stonehenge.  Most of the work was around the basics of the so called Black Mass as reconstructed from witchcraft trials and seconary reconstructions available then.
